Message from The President: Q4 2022

Pressing News,
What I've Learned About the Print Industry (So Far)

It’s hard for me to believe, but I’m wrapping up my second year as President. That said, I realize there’s still a lot to learn about print. It’s fair to call me an outsider as I have worked my entire career in non-profit management. That experience has positioned me well as the senior staffer at PIAG. But since Day 1, I have made it my goal to absorb as much knowledge about the print industry as possible.

By now, I can explain the difference between offset and digital, sheetfed and web, and if I hear a name, I can probably tell you whether they ever won the PIAG Benjamin Franklin Award.

Here are some other things I’ve learned:

  • Print is welcoming: As more print shops re-open their doors to visitors, I’ve had the opportunity to call on nearly two dozen PIAG members throughout the state. I’ve been to Columbus, Ball Ground, Macon, Duluth, Decatur, Atlanta, Kennesaw, Marietta, and more. At each stop, from the owner to receptionist, I have been welcomed warmly and given undivided attention to learn more about how a print facility operates. It’s been a great learning experience, and I look forward to visiting more of you in 2023.
  • Print is resourceful: Nearly every owner I speak with tells me about their struggles with supplies (mostly paper) and/or workers. I can’t imagine the stress many of you have trying to find the two most critical resources to keep your companies running. I continue to be impressed at your resourcefulness and ability to keep your cool during some very stressful times.
  • Print has a bright future: By and large, PIAG members are an optimistic bunch. I’ve appreciated that since the beginning. It must be difficult sometimes when you’re confident there’s a brighter future down the road but it’s tough to see through a muddy windshield. The PIAG Board is optimistic too. Your leaders are engaged in strategic planning for the future and starting next year, will roll out a new mission, vision, and services to help you be more successful.

Of course, I still have lots to learn about print. It’s one of the reasons I get out of bed in the morning. It’s an exciting challenge, and I feel lucky to be a part of this welcoming, resourceful, optimistic community of professionals.

Enjoy your fall, and as always, please reach out if you ever want to talk or there’s anything you need.

Sincerely,

Jon Krueger
PIAG President & CEO
